about

In 2021, Folklore Tapes crowdfunded a few releases celebrating the label's tenth anniversary. As with the previous campaign in 2014, the top-level funding reward was a bespoke cassette tape, printed in an edition of one on a theme chosen by the backer.

This time round, we were set the task of composing soundtracks for two M.R. James ghost stories. My side focussed on A Warning to the Curious, in which an archaeologist inadvertantly discovers one of the mythical 'lost crowns of East Anglia' - thereby summoning its guardian spirit.

The notion that a treasure has its guardian is a common trope, and one which featured heavily in the 2016 Folklore Tapes release Black Dog Traditions of England. As this was an anniversary project for the label, I wanted to link back to that record in some way. So it was that I found myself spooling through the black dog multitrack tapes from 2016, only to find plenty of forgotten music. I took the pick of those sounds and cut them with new field recordings to create this soundtrack.
