I spent the first few months of this year living in St. Margaret's Hope, Orkney. I brought a tape recorder along with me to record storms and bird-song, but ended up using it to record songs. Places bring out certain moods, and in that place - a cold stone house by the sea, with gusting sleet at the window - I often felt like singing.

This is a selection of songs from those tapes, featuring five covers and a couple of demos for a new album (due later this year). I have been playing most of the cover songs for well over a decade now - they fall easily to my fingers when I pick up a guitar.

For those interested in process, the vocals and guitar were recorded live in Orkney to a portable 1/4" Uher recorder. Those recordings were then bounced to a 1/2" Tascam multitrack deck for overdubs in Edinburgh. It was a fun way to work.
