about

Back in 2014, Folklore Tapes ran a fundraiser to reissue a few out-of-print releases on vinyl. The top-tier reward for backers was an original, tailor-made album on cassette, produced in an edition of one.

Three people went for the reward and the next week of my life dissolved into feverish improvisation and recording. At the end of it I emerged, somewhat bleary-eyed, with three short albums on themes chosen by the backers. I remember very little about making them.

This is the best preserved of those soundtracks, a set of improvisations for 'fogou' -- mysterious tunnels found in prehistoric settlements throughout Cornwall. It features loose arrangements for piano, synthesizer and guitar, stitched together by field-recordings.

The albums were recorded on a Tascam 424 using whatever cheap old cassettes I had lying about, making this quite a lo-fi release. I'd like to make the other albums available at some point, but both would need serious editing (and possibly even re-recording). Parts of those tapes have deteriorated to the point where all the higher frequencies have gone, leaving behind only a low, clicky warble.
